SUMMARY:SNOWDON – MAY 2020 (Fundraising)
DESCRIPTION:WE ARE TREKKING SNOWDON FOR SUNSET\nhttps://www.breeseadventures.co.uk/events/snowdon-may-2020 \nTHE TREK\nSnowdon\, or Yr Wyddfa to use its Welsh name\, is the highest mountain in Wales\, and at 1035metres is higher than any mountain in England. It sits majestically in Snowdonia National Park\, its rugged beauty providing you with the most amazing opportunity for adventure. \nThe ‘Manchester Homeless Charter’ team are inviting you to join them on a Snowdon adventure to fundraise for this wonderful charity. \nThis trek will take the Llanberis Path to the summit\, arriving in time to experience the most amazing views across Snowdonia at sunset. \nYou can find out more about Snowdon and the Llanberis Path here. You will then descend via the Llanberis Path. \n  \nABOUT THE CHARITY\nBig Change is part of Manchester Homelessness Charter\, bringing together people experiencing homelessness\, charities\, grassroots groups\, the council\, businesses and individuals to End Homelessness in Manchester.\n\n\nThe Big Change fund supports individuals who are homeless by paying for items they need – a deposit for a home\, a training course\, clothes for a job interview\, furnishing for a new flat\, or travel costs.\n\n\nWe are hoping to raise funds and donate as part of International Men’s Day in November.

SUMMARY:Suicide and Self Harm Lecture at Queen's University Belfast
DESCRIPTION:The School of Psychology at QUB invites all staff and students to attend a presentation for International Men’s Day 2019\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nAs part of the School’s Athena SWAN activities\, we have invited Prof Siobhan O’Neill (Ulster University) to present her seminal work on suicide and self harm. The presentation followed by Q&A is at 2-3pm and takes place in OG.115 in the David Keir Building. \nWe would be delighted if you would consider joining us. \nSummary \nSuicide is a leading cause of death of men in Northern Ireland\, and recent studies have shown that one in five students here have engaged in self harm. In this talk Siobhan will discuss the factors associated with suicidal behaviour and self-harm including the role of mental illness and emotional regulation. She will explain the psychological and biological functions of suicidal behaviour as the basis for an understanding of what we can do to address this problem\, and what treatments work to address this problem. In this talk Siobhan will discuss her own recent studies of factors impacting on suicidal behaviour in public places\, and the evidence of suicidal behaviour as a result of the transgenerational legacy of the Troubles. \nSpeaker Biography \nProfessor Siobhan O’Neill is a Professor of Mental Health Sciences at Ulster University where she has worked for almost 20 years. In 2008 Siobhan coordinated the largest ever study of mental health in Northern Ireland\, which was part of the World health Organisation’s World Mental Health Survey Initiative. This study revealed the high proportions of the NI population who engaged in suicidal behaviour and self harm. Siobhan subsequently coordinated the NI suicide study\, a study of the characteristics of over 1600 suicides and undetermined deaths and the first comprehensive mental health study of student mental health in NI. She has over 140 research papers in peer-reviewed journals. Siobhan is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Irish National Suicide Research Foundation\, and counselling charity Youthlife. She sits on the Advisory Board of the National Confidential Inquiry into Suicide and Homicide in people with a mental illness in the UK and is a member of the NI Towards Zero Suicide Collaborative group. Her current research programmes focus on mental health in school children\, the transgenerational transmission of trauma\, and suicide crisis line caller behaviour.

SUMMARY:Plymouth International Men's Day 2019 Conference
DESCRIPTION:Plymouth International Men’s Day Conference celebrates positive male role models in Plymouth and raises awareness of men’s issues.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nThe aim of International Men’s Day is to celebrate positive male role models in Plymouth and raises awareness of men’s issues. These include topics such as men’s health\, diversity\, toxic masculinity\, coping with bereavement and the prevalence of male suicide. \nEach year the event has gone from strength to strength in the UK and is marked and celebrated by a variety of organisations in the private\, public and charitable sectors across the country. Many have used it to highlight the need to provide more support from men and boys as well as the support they already provide. \nIMD in the UK takes a gender inclusive approach and therefore believes in ensuring that issues affecting women and girls are also resolved. \nIt also recognises the intersection between gender and other factors such as race and sexuality which can compound the inequalities affecting men and boys. \nWe will follow that same ethos at the Plymouth conference. \nThe Plymouth conference aims to celebrate positive male role models\, provide a forum for open discussion and provide access to health care support \nThroughout the afternoon we will hear from local and national speakers from diverse backgrounds covering a broad range of topics appropriate to the issue that men face on a daily basis. \nThere will be ample opportunity for delegates to mingle\, meet and learn from each other and from the various organisations and exhibitors supporting the conference. \nFurther information can be found on the website https://plymouthimd.co.uk and by following Plymouth International Men’s Day on Facebook and Twitter \nWe look forward to welcoming you to our inaugural conference. Please share this great occasion with friends and on social media.

SUMMARY:Conference: Make the difference - rethinking how we work with boys
DESCRIPTION:The first annual Wales conference for International Men’s Day on Tuesday\, 19th November\, 2019 at Christchurch Centre\, Newport NP20 5PP\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/make-the-difference-rethinking-how-we-work-with-boys-tickets-63271288126\n\n\nJoin us for this landmark event celebrating International Men’s Day. Exploring how we ‘make the difference: rethinking how we work with boys’ to ensure all young men have a positive and healthy future. \nWe are all aware that male suicide rates are three times higher than female suicide rates and that one man in five dies before he is old enough to retire. There will be opportunities to share knowledge and explore new and differing perspectives and which enable us to work together to change the negative statistics about men. \nThe aims of the day are to; \n· promote boys and young men’s health and wellbeing; \n· celebrate men’s positive contributions to society\, their community and families; and \n· promote positive male role models \nThe objective is to help improve gender relations and equality\, to create a safer better world where everyone has the opportunity to fulfil their potential. \nConfirmed speakers include: \nDaniel Sobel \nMike Armiger \nJohn Sheppard – Resilience Doughnut \nThe conference aims to broaden understanding\, build co-operative networks and spread knowledge to enable effective ways in which to promote the wellbeing of boys and men.

SUMMARY:Masculinity in the Workplace Conference
DESCRIPTION:Mary Portas\, author of Work Like a Woman and founder of the Portas Agency\, is leading the line-up at this year’s Masculinity in the Workplace conference. \nThe conference takes place on International Men’s Day\, 19 November\, in the London headquarters of Havas KX. It will also feature Han-Son Lee (founder of Daddilife); Marvyn Harrison (founder of Dope Black Dads); and Coca-Cola European Partners’ Richard Schmidt. \nIt will offer attendees the opportunity to debate and discuss new\, modern constructs around masculinity. By challenging constructs of masculinity that currently exist in some workplaces\, the event will open up fresh conversation to provide inspiration for change. \nAttendees will learn more about the opportunities for male leaders to embrace change\, how to expand their capacity for vulnerability\, and will take part an open conversation around mental health issues. \nThe event will be powered by culture change business Utopia and The Hobbs Consultancy\, in collaboration with HeANDShe and Token Man.  The line-up also features CDM Group’s Phil Bartlett and accessibility rights activist Will Pike. \nDaniele Fiandaca\, co-founder at Utopia and Token Man\, said: “Recent focus has been on the changes that women need to make to fit into a masculine workplace\, when we should be focusing on creating more inclusive workplaces which work for all genders. This event will re-examine the damaging traditional masculine traits that are hindering modern businesses\, and explore ways we can build workplace cultures that are more effective and more inclusive for everyone. \n“This event is for anyone who is passionate about driving gender equality in the workplace and we welcome everyone however they identify or express themselves. In particular we would love to see a broad representation of CEOs\, CMOs\, HR Directors and inclusion & diversity practitioners.” \nRoxanne Hobbs\, founder of HeANDShe and The Hobbs Consultancy\, added: “The vision for the event is to re-examine the idea of the hero. We found that many leaders who had really questioned their bias\, impact and stereotypes were those for whom something hard had happened. An inciting incident had led to a paradigm shift and a subsequent behavioural change. \n“What can we learn from these people?  We want to create a culture in which being a male leader is synonymous with courageous vulnerability\, caregiving\, empathy and balanced mental health. We simply cannot talk about creating a difference with gender in the workplace without including men in the conversation and without making masculinity part of that discussion.”

SUMMARY:International Men's Day - School Assembly Plan
DESCRIPTION:From Andrew Farrell: \nhttps://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/international-men-s-day-assembly-12172531 \nThis assembly is suitable for KS3/4 and is intended to be interactive. It can be used to mark International Men’s Day\, or as an assembly that focuses on the needs of boys and men. The statistics come from the Men and Boys Coalition. \nI have included an introductory exercise that I thought was important when delivering this topic. I want to ensure that the audience focuses on issues that relate to boys and men and not\, as is so often becomes the case\, default to a tit-for-tat debate. The topics covered are not comprehensive\, but I have left out subjects that may be contentious\, inappropriate for an assembly\, or upsetting for students.\nThere is also a short ppt that could be used as a follow-up activity.
