SUMMARY:Conference: Make the difference - rethinking how we work with boys
DESCRIPTION:The first annual Wales conference for International Men’s Day on Tuesday\, 19th November\, 2019 at Christchurch Centre\, Newport NP20 5PP\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/make-the-difference-rethinking-how-we-work-with-boys-tickets-63271288126\n\n\nJoin us for this landmark event celebrating International Men’s Day. Exploring how we ‘make the difference: rethinking how we work with boys’ to ensure all young men have a positive and healthy future. \nWe are all aware that male suicide rates are three times higher than female suicide rates and that one man in five dies before he is old enough to retire. Data tells us that girls out do boys academically and that men are 22 times more likely as women to be imprisoned. \nThis conference offers an opportunity to work together to make a difference and rewrite how we work with boys to ensure they have a bright and positive future. \nThe conference will include presentations\, exhibitors\, and keynote speakers\, giving you opportunities to connect and learn about evidence based strategies\, best practice\, new projects and supporting organisations. There will be opportunities to share knowledge and explore new and differing perspectives and which enable us to work together to change the negative statistics about men. \nThe aims of the day are to; \n· promote boys and young men’s health and wellbeing; \n· celebrate men’s positive contributions to society\, their community and families; and \n· promote positive male role models \nThe objective is to help improve gender relations and equality\, to create a safer better world where everyone has the opportunity to fulfil their potential. \nConfirmed speakers include: \nDaniel Sobel \nMike Armiger \nJohn Sheppard – Resilience Doughnut \nThe conference aims to broaden understanding\, build co-operative networks and spread knowledge to enable effective ways in which to promote the wellbeing of boys and men.

SUMMARY:Masculinity in the Workplace Conference
DESCRIPTION:Mary Portas\, author of Work Like a Woman and founder of the Portas Agency\, is leading the line-up at this year’s Masculinity in the Workplace conference. \nThe conference takes place on International Men’s Day\, 19 November\, in the London headquarters of Havas KX. It will also feature Han-Son Lee (founder of Daddilife); Marvyn Harrison (founder of Dope Black Dads); and Coca-Cola European Partners’ Richard Schmidt. \nIt will offer attendees the opportunity to debate and discuss new\, modern constructs around masculinity. By challenging constructs of masculinity that currently exist in some workplaces\, the event will open up fresh conversation to provide inspiration for change. \nAttendees will learn more about the opportunities for male leaders to embrace change\, how to expand their capacity for vulnerability\, and will take part an open conversation around mental health issues. \nThe event will be powered by culture change business Utopia and The Hobbs Consultancy\, in collaboration with HeANDShe and Token Man.  The line-up also features CDM Group’s Phil Bartlett and accessibility rights activist Will Pike. \nDaniele Fiandaca\, co-founder at Utopia and Token Man\, said: “Recent focus has been on the changes that women need to make to fit into a masculine workplace\, when we should be focusing on creating more inclusive workplaces which work for all genders. This event will re-examine the damaging traditional masculine traits that are hindering modern businesses\, and explore ways we can build workplace cultures that are more effective and more inclusive for everyone. \n“This event is for anyone who is passionate about driving gender equality in the workplace and we welcome everyone however they identify or express themselves. In particular we would love to see a broad representation of CEOs\, CMOs\, HR Directors and inclusion & diversity practitioners.” \nRoxanne Hobbs\, founder of HeANDShe and The Hobbs Consultancy\, added: “The vision for the event is to re-examine the idea of the hero. We found that many leaders who had really questioned their bias\, impact and stereotypes were those for whom something hard had happened. An inciting incident had led to a paradigm shift and a subsequent behavioural change. \n“What can we learn from these people?  We want to create a culture in which being a male leader is synonymous with courageous vulnerability\, caregiving\, empathy and balanced mental health. We simply cannot talk about creating a difference with gender in the workplace without including men in the conversation and without making masculinity part of that discussion.”

SUMMARY:International Men's Day - School Assembly Plan
DESCRIPTION:From Andrew Farrell: \nhttps://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/international-men-s-day-assembly-12172531 \nThis assembly is suitable for KS3/4 and is intended to be interactive. It can be used to mark International Men’s Day\, or as an assembly that focuses on the needs of boys and men. The statistics come from the Men and Boys Coalition. \nI have included an introductory exercise that I thought was important when delivering this topic. I want to ensure that the audience focuses on issues that relate to boys and men and not\, as is so often becomes the case\, default to a tit-for-tat debate. The topics covered are not comprehensive\, but I have left out subjects that may be contentious\, inappropriate for an assembly\, or upsetting for students.\nThere is also a short ppt that could be used as a follow-up activity.

SUMMARY:Fleetwood Community Trust celebrate local men - event at Sea Cadet Base
DESCRIPTION:On International Men’s Day next month\, Fleetwood Town Community Trust will gather the local community and celebrate local men at an event which will be held at the Sea Cadet Base from 11am until 3pm. \nInternational Men’s Day is celebrated on 19th November each year by over 70 countries\, and focuses on raising awareness of discrimination and men’s health. \nThe event\, which is sponsored by Fleetwood-based charity Men’s Shed\, will showcase services on offer to men and women in the town with representatives from a number of charities and community groups including Healthier Fleetwood\, Trinity Hospice\, Lancashire Mind\, Prince’s Trust\, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services\, and more. \n\n\n\nThe event will be opened at 11am by Fleetwood Town Chairman and local business owner Andy Pilley\, and there will be guest speakers including local boxer Brian Rose (12pm)\, Men’s Shed founder Tony O’Neill (1pm)\, and Dave McPartlin\, Headteacher at Flakefleet Primary School (2pm). \nJohn Hartley\, Community Sports Development Officer at the Community Trust\, has played a pivotal role in organising the event\, after Stuart Macrae\, who is from the local area\, approached him with the idea. \n“I joined forces with Stuart to organise this International Men’s Day event to bring the community together and give residents the opportunity to find out about local organisations and networks they can look to for support. \n“As well as celebrating men who have a positive impact on the town\, it’s the perfect chance to meet new people.  By opening up and sharing experiences\, we can help tackle social isolation and improve mental health across the town.” \nIn the lead up to the event\, we would like to encourage everyone to nominate the male they think has created the greatest impact on the local community over the last year. The person with the most votes will be presented with a certificate during the event. Click here to cast your vote. \nTony O’Neill\, Founder of Men’s Shed\, said: \n“This event is about bringing Fleetwood together as a community\, and respecting the fact that men have feelings too. So many men bottle things up as there’s still a stigma surrounding men opening up and talking about how they feel\, and this shouldn’t be the case. \n“This is the perfect event to show men that there are others in the same boat as them. We want to nullify the stigma surrounding men’s mental health\, and let them know it’s ok to ask for help.” \nMen’s Shed is a charity offering peer support\, help\, advice and friendship to members. It provides people with a place to share their experiences and helps them open up emotionally\, making a real difference to the lives of local residents. \nRefreshments will be served throughout the event\, and everyone who attends will receive a goody bag. Free car parking will also be available opposite the venue\, on Rossall Point car park. \nWe hope to see you all there on Tuesday 19th November at the Sea Cadet Base\, 140 Beach Road\, Fleetwood\, FY7 8PQ.
